The thread that ties an individual to the society & humanity must be tenacious. It should have strength, courage & resilience to bear any challenges that may be thrown in its way. The stronger it is, greater is the sensitivity & responsiveness of the individual. Natural disasters, man - made inequalities, lifestyle induced aggravation (health & environment) all are addressed by the children in our school. We have spread awareness about AIDS & Drug Abuse, provided homeopathic medicines for free, educated the ‘old’, donated not just cash & necessities but blood, empowered poor women through vocational training, Conserved energy, planted trees and conveyed the message of Reuse, Reduce & Recycle... we care for the society and our future citizens reaffirm their commitment to it every time the society calls out... or the need is felt!
“If you are in harmony with nature, with all the things around you, then you are in harmony with all human beings.”
That is why young children are encouraged to have a relationship with NATURE. They are provided real experiences of caring for nature, discovering its beauty and wonder, understanding the challenges that it is faced with and internalizing, completely, the reduce-reuse-recycle concept.
Our Eco Club endeavors have received great laurels.
DLDAV Model School, Shalimar Bagh won the Platinum award in the ‘Create to Inspire School Program’ - an innovative school program by Nokia in support with Department of Environment, Delhi Government, GIZ and i-dream.
Major Initiatives...
The school has a paper recycling plant in its campus. The recycled paper generated out of used stationery is then designed into beautiful utility items like folders, box almirahs, dustbins, decoration pieces, gift items etc.
Rain water harvesting system is in place which has led to an increase in the water table from 70 feet to 40 feet. The green water pipes running down the school building inspire young minds to search for innovative solutions to environmental problems.
Just talking about it was not enough. We got down to actually using alternate sources of energy. Solar panels installed on the rooftops of the school building help generate 6kw of energy that provides electricity to 8 rooms on the third floor.
Waste Management is an on-going crusade carried out by students. Under this, the holy mantra of reduce-reuse-recycle is spread in every nook and corner of the school and neighboring area. Awareness is the first step to bring about a change. So, information dissemination about use of twin-bin system, alternatives to plastic etc. were made a part of school life. Our students are proud to be waste managers. They collect waste material(for example, pen bodies this time) and turn them into pieces of art! There’s a Nek Chand in every heart! Even nests for birds were made out of eco-friendly material and placed on trees.
E-waste campaign has become an integral part of our lives. The primary objective behind this is to sensitize the future citizens about e-waste generation and management. The children collected 30kg. e-waste, submitted it to Nokia and saw how the same is disposed off. An educational drive was also launched in the neighborhood and the school became a collection point for e-waste.
A ‘reduce petrol consumption’ drive was undertaken by the children. ‘Save fuel, save money, save the planet!’ was the line that did the round. Data on fuel consumption was collected from parent community and the more aware children became the advisers suggesting ways to reduce fuel consumption.
Student volunteers undertook this drive with great passion. Through Power point presentations, group discussions and door to door campaigning-the students urged their school mates and community members to use less of plastic products and to switch over to healthy alternatives. Periodic checks on plastic usage ensured that the momentum was not let off.
School and Residence-both became the venues for field work for Energy Conservation. Parents were counseled and teachers were guided to turn off switches and appliances when not in use and to buy star rated energy efficient brands.
Audio-visual presentations, Poster designing, slogan writing and surveys were conducted to ensure that this precious elixir is saved for generations to come. The presentations that painted the picture of a waterless world and brought forward the alarming statistics of its wastage shook everyone’s conscience making them pledge to save every drop.
Awareness precedes action! Pictures showing the journey of waste - from generation to disposal - were clicked and drawn by learners. These were then strung together to form a story. The realization that every individual effort matters reaffirmed the determination of students and faculty to control waste generation.
This project created awareness on the need to reduce consumption of oil, paper, electricity and water. Many activities like slogan writing, poster designing etc. were organized for the same.
Here’s highlighting some of our efforts in reducing our carbon footprint:-
